The Mindpower Gallery in downtown Reedsport is honored to host an opening reception for Portland, Or. artist Marian Flood. Flood is an Oregon artist who creates dynamic collages, drawings and paintings of lands and waters. She works with the stories and history of places as a basis for her art, sometimes using the actual earth as a pigment.
The exhibit, entitled ‘A World of Textures’ is a show exploring Rock, Land and Seas. One unique side series explores all the seas in the world. Flood says, “The Oceans have many seas. Every Sea has a story. I made a collage for each one to capture characteristics, a look or it’s unique history. In another series handmade rock pigments has led to earthy, gritty scenes of rocky landscapes in the West, portraying the places where the rocks were collected. Her series of Grand Canyon paintings was displayed at the annual International Gem and Mineral Show in Tucson, Arizona. These rock paintings, landscapes and the Seas series will all be part of the one-person exhibition from July 18th through August 16th. The public is invited to the opening reception in her honor on Friday, July 18th from 4pm to 7pm, light hours devours and refreshments will be served. No-host bar.
Flood has a B.F.A. from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies from Marylhurst University. The Masters focused on water - how it shapes geology, spiritual connections, and contemporary resource issues. Her paper on the geology of rapids on the Clackamas River was illustrated with drawings and cross sections. She wrote about how water is used as a metaphor in sacred texts. Her thesis argued that a basic problem of water shortage is tied to consumer consumption patterns.
Teaching expanded her subject matter and techniques. She taught art in after-school programs, at an urban middle school, and for adult community education. Her CV also includes advertising layout design, typesetting at a commercial print shop, and as the in-house graphic designer for a luxury resort.
Flood’s work hangs in private collections across the United States. Her work is frequently in juried shows sponsored by The Oregon Society for Artists. Mindpower Gallery in Reedsport and the Elizabeth Jones Gallery in Portland represent her work.
